Jean Types

There are many different kinds of jeans, but most share the same material called denim. Jeans can actually be made of any other material which is a common confusion. The word "jean" really refers to the design of the pants. The run of the mill Levi's jeans is the best example of what a jean design is. The main difference in jeans today is the cut or fit of the jeans. Companies have very many different names for the fit of their jeans but they follow some very basic principles that are not new, they simply follow changing fashion trends.

To start off there are three major sections of a pair of jeans. Where the jeans rest on a person's waist is called the rise. There are high,regular and low rise jeans depending on if the sit above, at or below the waist respectively. Next, the thigh of the jeans has three different fits as well. A full thigh is wide and very standard. A relaxed thigh is slightly loose, and a fitted thigh is the tightest. Finally there is the opening of the leg at the bottom. A tapered opening will get narrower than the thigh. Straight means that the opening will be just as wide as the thigh. A boot-fit means that it will be slightly wider than the thigh of the jeans. Finally, there is the flare which is the widest opening at the bottom. All of these can be mixed up to create a custom look by each designer.

There are also a few extra touches to jeans that refer to a purpose the jean actually serves. A carpenter jean is an old term for a loose fitting jean with a hammer loop on one side and two side pockets. There is also a utility jean that is loose fitting and has reinforced fabric on the knees.
Popular trends right now don't always name each fit in the title but will usually have a full description available somewhere. Like, a low-rise boot-fit usually means that it is a low waist, fitted thigh and a boot-fit opening. Certain cuts accentuate different body types and tastes.

Windowpane Suits

The windowpane suits are an obviously understated in mens fashion. It gives an extremely stylish and dressy effect that differentiates greatly from the usual stripe suits.

Instead of a squarish windowpane, you can settle for a rectangular formation that provides an elongating effect for a men's body as well. Windowpane suits also allow harmonious combinations with more patterns than the usual plaid suits.

Windowpanes are very suitable for spring time. Instead of going for a pronounced thick windowpane pattern, you can try one a charcoal gray fabric with subtle violet chalk windowpane rectangular in shape. Or alternatively a light gray suit with pastel blue windowpane rectangular pattern.

Brown Suits
A color avoided by many men and deemed as not worth a timepiece suit. However, I beg to differ as this color gives an earthly tone and also a down-to-earth feel. It deviates from the predictable "safe" colors like gray and navy where we should have become overdosed with by now.

Brown suits can be easily matched with earth tones from yellow to gold to tan colors. Depending on the tone of your brown, combination with maroon, cream, or even navy blue is also possible.

The History of Skinny Jeans for Men

The guys skinny jeans started gaining importance after the 1950's. It was adopted by the trendiest men of rock n roll among which are Mick Jagger. It gained popularity due to country music stars opting for it. Elvis Presley shocked the country by wearing the slim-fitting jeans. In the 1960's, rock bands such as The Beatles and also The Rolling Stones wore them.

Skinny jeans gained prominence in the 1970's fashion scene. Male musical icons of the countries of the USA and Europe wore these skinny tight jeans in the late 70's with the rise of punk. The jeans became the symbol of punk heroes and bands such as The Ramones and The Clash, The Sex Pistols and The Stooges.

In the 1980's, the skinny acid-washed jeans became popular with heavy metal bands, such as Anthrax, Metallica and Slayer. They did not wear spandex. By late 1980's and also early 1990's, metal bands such as Poison, Bon Jovi and Slaughter abandoned the spandex and adopted the form fitted jeans. It was also worn by pop stars such as Michael Jackson. In early 1990's, the skinny tight jeans went out of fashion and was replaced by baggy carpenter jeans.

In 2000s, the jeans were preferred by the indie revival bands such as The Strokes. In 2005, this were a part of line of fashion designers such as Karl Lager field and also Stella McCartney. Many male style icons such as Noel Fielding and Pete Doherty have adopted the skinny jeans. This has made the guys skinny jeans prominent in the modern fashion industry.

Men's Fashion for the 21st Century - Time to Kick It up a Notch

Very few people would deny that most men get their fashion sense from those they spend the most time with, or God forbid, their fathers. Had I been a man and decided to go down this route of dressing like my father, I would be wearing white tube socks halfway up my calves, garage sale t-shirts and shorts from the 1970s. Mind you, this is my father's "going out" look. If a man decides to dress like his peers there is no help there unless this man happens to be George Clooney and has friends like Brad Pitt and Don Cheadle. Further down the spectrum, there are those men whose wives dress them.

Every morning, there is a freshly ironed outfit draped on the bed courtesy of the old ball and chain. One would think this might fare better for men as women naturally have a better sense of fashion, but, in reality, it doesn't. Like men, these women also get a sense of men's fashion from their fathers as most women would hardly have time to read an issue of GQ, what with all the hundreds of women's fashion magazines to devour. No, in America, most men are in the dark about fashion whether it comes to formal wear or casual wear. If you are one of the millions of men who think it is okay to wear sandals with socks, please, for the love of our country and for our sanity, read on.

Casual Wear

Getting down to the basics, what is the one piece of clothing that every man owns at least 2 pairs of? That's right...jeans. Granted, these two pairs of jeans probably get worn at 4 to 5 times each during the week before getting washed, but we will leave that issue alone until our hygiene article comes out next month. Now, men, if you want to bring yourself into the 21st century, as will be the theme for most of men's fashion, remember that slim is in. While bootcut jeans probably won't get you turned away from the newest club downtown, you might get to skip ahead in line with a slim fit, straight-legged jean. These jeans can go from dressed up to dressed down quite easily; so you can go bowling with your guy friends in the afternoon and then head to your date at the swankiest bar in town with only a quick change of the shoes and shirt. As for dress shirts, be sure to tuck them in to create a more slimming effect.

When it comes to casual footwear, stick to the classics, like Converse or old-school Pumas. Men, leave the cross-training footwear at home; while okay for the gym and around town, they are not intended for a night out on the town. It would be a travesty to pair your nice new jeans with some ratty, smelly running shoes. T-shirts are still perfectly acceptable, as long as they are tasteful, hole-less, grease-less, and stain-less...and the right size. There is nothing less attractive than a man wearing a shirt two sizes too large, or two sizes too small, for that matter. If you are dressing up the straight-legged jean, nothing says sleek like a slim-fit button-down shirt. Paired with some appropriate cufflinks and leather Italian shoes, you'll look like you stepped out of the pages of a men's fashion magazine. In a nutshell, when going casual, leave the baggy clothes to the teenagers and dress up like the attractive man you are.

Business or Formal Wear

If given the opportunity, most men will avoid suits like the plague. Many men feel like they have turned into their grandfather the second a suit jacket hits their shoulders. Consider this: When you see an actor on the red carpet sporting a suit, do you instantly think he looks like an old man? Probably not; and the reason for this is because as a man, you must wear the suit, not the other way around. The perfect suit will be different for each person; they depend on a man's height and build. Avoid wearing a suit right off the rack. Just because a suit is on sale for 85% off list price does not mean it needs to find its way into your closet.

The best thing you can do if you find yourself in a situation where a suit is in order is to find a superb tailor in your area. No suit will fit exactly the way it was intended right off the rack, so shell out a few bucks to get the suit fitted perfectly. If you are on the slimmer or average side, a slim tie, a slim-fit shirt, a pair of classic sterling silver cufflinks and a narrow lapel on the jacket are musts. On the flip-side, if you are still trying to lose a few pounds or are very tall, skip the slim tie and opt for a wider tie to keep your body proportioned. Keep an eye out for the shoulder pads on your suit to be sure they are aligned with your own shoulders, so it doesn't look like you have wings. One last tip to keep in mind is to always keep the bottom button of your jacket unbuttoned, unless, of course, you are wearing a one button jacket. Take a look at almost any male model wearing a suit and you will see what I mean.

These are just a few tips to whip your fashion sense into the current century. Take a few minutes to pick up a men's fashion magazine every once in a while and take a quick peek at what the men are sporting these days. You may feel silly subscribing to Esquire or GQ or fear the ribbing you would get from your guy friends for doing so, so trust me when I say these magazines always have articles and photographs of the sultriest female celebrities, so you can still retain your true guy status. With just a few key additions to your wardrobe, you can go from fashion disaster to fashion icon in no time.

Men's Party Wear

An ill-fitting and badly tailored suit can be identified even from a distance and has a damaging effect on your image. So getting the right fit in a suit and having it properly tailored is rather important for a partygoer. For men today, pants are an essential part of any outfit. These may be dress pants for a formal function, or casual pants, like jeans, for outdoor pursuits or just lounging around. It goes without saying that the choice of pants available at stores is truly vast. On the other hand, many pants on the market today are tailored for men of average height and above. This leads to problems for shorter men, who may unwisely end up choosing unsuitable pants that accentuate their lack of height. Sadly, these can attract unfavorable comments or even ridicule from others. To redress this, here are a few tips for short men who may be unsure of which pants to choose:

In many cases, shorter men have a specific problem, which is that their legs are on the short side and somewhat out of proportion with their torso. It is understandable that this leads to distress, but, rather than dwelling on it, short men should be constructive. This involves looking carefully for more flattering attire, of the kind which conveys the impression that they are somewhat taller than they really are.

Vital to changing the viewer's impression of the height of a short man are the color and cut of his pants. With regard to color, darker tones are best. These include black, dark gray, brown and darker blues, all of which have the effect of making the legs appear both thinner and longer.

Concerning how pants are cut, the best style for short men is regular fit, with a regular rise. These are cut on the slim side, which makes the wearer's legs look longer and thinner. To be avoided by short men at all costs are low-rise and baggy fit pants. Low rise is particularly bad because it appears to move the waist and crotch lower - fatal on a man whose legs are already short. Baggy pants again make the legs look shorter, in this case by making them seem fatter, which deceives the eye as to bodily proportions. For similar reasons short men should also keep away from long, baggy shorts.

But all things considered, and provided he perseveres and shops around carefully, there is no reason why a short man should not look just as good as his taller counterpart.
